LAWRENCE — On Tuesday, On3 reported Kansas baseball coach Dan Fitzgerald to be among one of the two most frequently mentioned names when it comes to who will take over at South Carolina.

The report does describe Coastal Carolina coach Kevin Schnall as the leader. Schnall’s team was the College World Series runner-up last season and is enjoying success again this year. But that Fitzgerald is being considered as a potential option, once again focuses national attention on whether Fitzgerald will stick with KU moving forward or potentially make the jump to the Southeastern Conference or elsewhere.

Fitzgerald, though, expressed this week how much he enjoys being at Kansas when asked about how he'd deal with being named as a candidate for other job openings. The Jayhawks (39-16) are the Big 12 Conference regular season champion. He’s the Big 12 coach of the year.

“I’ve been so fortunate to be at such great, such cool places, but I think the benefit of being at LSU and DBU is I coached for two Hall of Fame coaches who were rumored in every job ever open, whether it was the big leagues or other college jobs, and you just know that 99.9% of the time when someone’s named they’re not the person to get the job,” Fitzgerald said. “And so, I just learned a long time ago to — like I’ve told you before, you guys would be very, very disappointed at how often I don’t check your Twitter accounts, which is, I don’t mean that offensively, I’m just unaware of it. So, I love Kansas. I am so thankful that I signed an extension here last year, and what we’re doing here is so special.”

Fitzgerald is aware that his players are going to likely encounter the national attention that comes with their success, simply because they have phones, but his favorite part about this group is its ability to focus when it comes time to compete. Obviously, that’s led to success this season. On top of winning the Big 12, KU could host a NCAA regional in Lawrence following the Big 12 tournament.

Big 12 tournament play begins for Kansas on Thursday in the quarterfinals in Surprise, Arizona. As of Wednesday morning, that opponent is yet to be determined. If the Jayhawks can advance further two things are sure to happen, the program will become all the more likely to host a NCAA regional and Fitzgerald’s name will become all the more significant in high-profile job openings.
