RANDOLPH TOWNSHIP — Maplewood rode ace Chase Koelle's no-hitter to a 4-0 shutout over Cambridge Springs on Monday at Jake Boyle Memorial Field.

In the second at-bat of the game, Cambridge Springs' Brett Kania walked on. That was the only base runner Koelle allowed through the entire seven inning outing.

The sophomore ace struck out 16 on 91 pitches in what as a career day.

"I been having some arm issues throughout my pitching this season, so I tried to do a lot of stretching throughout the day. Every class period I was doing stretches to get my arm ready for today," Koelle said. "I felt like I was pretty prepared and pretty confident up there.

"Warmups felt pretty good. I felt comfortable and thought I was going to throw pretty well today."

Koelle struck out the side in the second inning and added two more strikeouts with a groundout in the third. That's when head coach Ken Smock started to feel like his pitcher might be in for a big outing.

"We had an inkling in the third with how he was progressing and started. That wasn't the game plan, for him to go the whole game. In all the years I've coached I've never been part of that," Smock said. "You seem to get that feeling and we said we'd ride it as long as we could. You get that feeling and the vibe in the dugout with players trying to keep him loose. It was an awesome day for him. I'm very proud of him."

Offensively, Maplewood scored twice in the opening inning. Koelle hit an RBI on a ground out, which scored AJ Proper. Levi Willison brought Kyle Jordan home on an RBI-single. From there, it was a defensive showcase the rest of the way.

After a leadoff double from Jordan in the third, first baseman Quinn Simmerman caught a rocket shot above his head and fired to second for a double play. In the fifth, outfielder Joseph Duda caught a ball in deep right field that appeared to be trouble.

The Tigers added two runs in the sixth. Elijah Hochstetler took home on a passed ball and Mitchell Potosky scored PJ Hirosky on an RBI ground out.

"Overall, very good job. They did rob us of some hits. We'd have liked to get a couple more, but it is what is it. Overall it was a good team outing," Smock said. "We needed that after two throbbings from Saegertown and Lakeview to get things turned around."

Koelle ended his day with a pop out to second baseman Landyn Reynolds, a swinging striekout and a ground out to Jordan at third base.

Maplewood moved to 5-2 on the year and 2-2 in Region 2 games. The Tigers are scheduled to play another region contest at Cochranton on Wednesday.

Cambridge Springs' pitchers combined for five strikeouts and five walks.

"As bad as this game was, there were some highlights I'm taking away that I want to build on. We had a couple plays in the field that were great. We had some young guys tracking the ball, which is awesome. Pitching, I'll be honest, overall I was very pleased with our pitching," Cambridge Springs head coach Andrew Brown said. "We allowed four runs, one shouldn't have happened. If we could have got the bat on the ball it could be a different story."

After a very wet and cold spring season so far, Monday was only the second game for the Blue Devils. They fell to 1-1 on the year. Between missing games and practicing inside, it's been a difficult start to the year.

Cambridge Springs is scheduled to host Lakeview on Wednesday.

"We know we're still gelling as a team. We have a young team and an inexperienced team. We lost a lot of seniors last year, so we're grinding. We have a lot to learn and need time to gel," Brown said. "I think the last couple years we would have gelled by now, but this year it's different. Not having games has really hurt us. Practicing in the gym isn't what we need. With this type of team, we need to play games."
