ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - The Washington Redskins have given linebacker Jeremiah Trotter permission to seek a trade.

Trotter, who was absent from the first day of minicamp Friday, was already a prime candidate to be cut after June 1 to save money under the salary cap. He would be entering the third year of a seven-year, $36 million contract this fall.

"We just feel like we're going to go in a different direction," coach Joe Gibbs said.

Trotter was a marquee signing two years ago, coming off two Pro Bowl seasons with Philadelphia. His first year in Washington was a disappointment, and his improved play last season failed to lift the defense out of the bottom third of the NFL.

Kevin Mitchell, the starting middle linebacker before Trotter was signed, is a top candidate to get his old spot back unless the Redskins sign or draft a younger player.

That would be great. Trotter has been under utilized in Washington.

I went to school in Trenton, and with millions of Eagles fans. So I have seen my share of the Eagles games.

Trotter is a lunatic MLB.

Not exactly the sharpest knife in the draw but he is deadly. Fast, strong, and hits really hard.

Would be a good pick up for the right price.

I wouldn't mind trotter. When they signed him I was like man they got themselves a good player...but he underacheived.

He was awesome, and the redskins got him at I believe 25 yrs old....which would make him like 27 now....possibly 28 during the season or so.

Question...if you trade for a player....doesn't the team you are getting the guy from eat the bonus...and then you only pay the base salary??? And only that base salary counts against the receiving teams cap?

If so, and I don't know the specifics, but knowing good ol danny boy he gave him a high signing bonus....so if all the above are true, its possible we'd only pay about 3 mill a season for him against our cap, then if you give up a player or pick you don't have to pay for that guys bonus and salary which would make him a net pickup of probably about 2-2.5 a season net cap wise.

If so, and they aren't asking for much....especially with the "he isn't fitting in our plans type quote", we should SERIOUSLY look at him. The lb draft is poor ONCE AGAIN, and we swung and missed a few time in fa...knowing that, and what he'd potentially cost us, I'd make the inquiry at least, and try to get it done.

Of course in this scenario there's a lot of if's and not being sure of cap rules....but if it is like the above it could be quite a steal.

Especially when you think how of all the players they brought in, most have sucked for unknown reasons, most of which I think many on the board would agree isn't related too much with talent....mostly imo its been overpaying for crappy guys, injuries, and paying for over the hill players coupled with schemes, coaching, etc....trotter is NONE of these (I don't think injury).

Many players have left a team and done crappy with another....many have have left a team and have gone on to have a great career...maybe some cliche rhetoric stuff, but this guy is 27 and has had pro bowl season, and we are thick/thin at lb depending on injuries and age. We need more youth and more solidity, I think trotter can be that guy, I think he can be that guy at a reasonable price, and I think we should do it.

Correct, the Redskins take the entire cap hit from signing bonus, which is $5M now or $2.5M this year and $2.5M next year after June 1st. They are expected to release him after June 1st, if they can't trade him, so his price should be very low.

He has base salaries of $2.7M, $4M and $5M for the remaining three years of his contract (option for two additional years).
