Knicks drafted Sergio De Larrea for a way to re-sign Mitchell Robinson originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
We don't often see many teams in the NBA look to draft-and-stash guys in the first round, but that's exactly what the New York Knicks just looked to do.
Selecting Sergio De Larrea with the No. 25 pick, the Knicks can draft-and-stash him to save money and sign others, potentially even Mitchell Robinson.
According to one report, the Knicks don't expect him to come to the NBA next season.
"Had heard De Larrea for both New York and Minnesota, before the Timberwolves traded No. 28, had appeal because of his draft-and-stash opportunity. Wolves obviously used that pick to get off Julius Randle's money. Knicks don't expect De Larrea to come to the NBA this season," Jake Fischer wrote.
If that ends up playing out, the Knicks wouldn't have to put his $3.2 million salary for next season on the books. For a team looking to save as much as possible to pay other guys, every dollar matters.
"Sergio De Larrea could be a draft stash, meaning the Knicks won't have to carry his $3.2 million salary next season. His salary is roughly $700K more than the vet minimum and $1.85M more than rookie minimum," Yossi Gozlan wrote.
I guess one could argue that it would've made more sense to trade the pick, but this is the route the Knicks went.
