The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to select Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft. With Mendoza projected as the instant starter, the Raiders are also in the market for a new backup signal caller. The best candidate is current Atlanta Falconsquarterback Kirk Cousins.
Recent reports are tying Cousins to the Raiders and it makes so much sense. General manager John Spytek recently traded Geno Smith to the New York Jets. Both Kenny Pickett and Aidan O'Connell have run their course with the Raiders, too.
New head coach Klint Kubiak deserves an opportunity to hand-pick his backup quarterback. Kubiak was Cousins' quarterbacks coach with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019-20. He was also his offensive coordinator in 2021. Cousins knows the playbook, and would help Mendoza acclimate to the system during training camp.
The Falcons will be willing to trade or release Cousins. They recently signed Tua Tagovailoa in free agency to compete with Michael Penix Jr. The Vikings were also once linked to a potential reunion with Cousins, but they appear to be aggressively pursuing Kyler Murray. That leaves the Raiders as the favorites to land the veteran quarterback.
Cousins should land in Vegas as Mendoza's backup this offseason.
