Everyone knows Fernando Mendoza is the future franchise QB in Las Vegas. Some would like to believe that means the Raiders are not sure about who will be the number one guy heading into training camp. Well, Klint Kubiak just put that to rest.
"When we go out to practice tomorrow, Kirk Cousins is the starting quarterback," Kubiak said. "He's the guy. And he's going to get a ton of reps. And he deserves them because he's put in really good football. But I want Fernando and I want Aidan [O'Connell] to push him."
In other words, this is the situation until further notice. That notice may not come during camp at all. Perhaps well into the season...or longer. That doesn't mean he is being handed the job. It means it's his job to lose. And if either Mendoza or O'Connell want it, they have to come take it.
"The best guy has to play," Kubiak added, noting that despite the feeling that Cousins is a mentor for the rookie, that's not his primary function. Kirk is here to play. And if he's the best option -- which right now he is -- then he is the starter.
