Kirk Cousins has always worked well with tight ends. And now he's sharing a field with arguably the best tight end in football.
Brock Bowers was an All Pro as a rookie in 2024, setting the rookie record for receiving yards by a tight end and the record for catches by a rookie at any position.
That season was stunning, but not entirely surprising considering what Bowers had done at Georgia, where he was an All-American as a freshman, won two National Championships, and was the only ever two-time John Mackey Award winner.
Kirk Cousins knows Bowers's game going back to his college days because Kirk's wife went to Georgia. She and her family were very excited to see Kirk teamed up with Brock.
And despite all of that, Bowers has still managed to surprise the 14-year NFL veteran.
"He caught like an inside fade when we were working and I said to Aidan [O'Connell], I said 'Hey, can he do that?' and Aidan kind of gave me a look like 'Is that a serious question?' Like he's going to be able to do that," Cousins said. "Is there anything he can't do? So, everybody's pretty excited about what he can do and we're just trying to learn right now."
The chemistry Cousins and Bowers have developed was on full display in practice on Tuesday, with the two making several gorgeous, several requiring great timing and Bowers breaking open into a tight window. Cousins completed each pass with seeming full confidence his elite tight end would be there and make the grab. And in each instance, he was.
Even still, Kirk added that he and the coaches are still in the process of trying to learn how to use Brock the best. But judging by the performance on the field Tuesday for the first day of minicamp, that learning is coming along nicely.
Recently head coach Klint Kubiak described Bowers as a "football robot from heaven", adding that he's the "standard bearer".
Both Kubiak and Cousins are testing their new weapon to see just how much he can do. And from the looks of things so far, it's farther then either of the two long time NFL offensive minds expected.
