The Atlanta Falcons hired head coach Stefanski roughly two weeks ago and finally introduced him during a joint press conference with president of football Matt Ryan on Tuesday. Stefanski commented on a number of topics, including quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and the team's offensive play-calling duties.
Another topic that came up had to do with a former player of Stefanski's. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield, who played for Stefanski for two years in Cleveland, took aim at his former coach on social media last week.
Mayfield called out Stefanski for trading him away "like a piece of garbage" and failing to send a call or text after the trade was completed.
"Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage," Mayfield wrote on his personal Twitter account before offering a mild warning. "Can’t wait to see you twice a year, coach."
Stefanski was asked about Mayfield's comments during his Tuesday press conference and did his best to downplay the issue.
"Baker is someone I have a lot of respect for as a player and as a person," Stefanski said of Mayfield. "I won't get into the specifics of those types of things"
The Browns traded Mayfield away two years after leading the team to its first playoff win in 25 years. Cleveland took a major swing by bringing in former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, which ended up being a major failure that cost the team over $200 million in guaranteed money.
Mayfield bounced back in 2023, finding a home with the Buccaneers and bringing stability to the quarterback position after Tom Brady retired. The Falcons will have to face the Bucs twice a year, so it's probably wise that Stefanski took the high road regarding Mayfield's comments.
