The Detroit Pistons have reached an agreement with one of their own free agents.
The Pistons re-signed Kevin Huerter to a three-year, $27 million contract, a league source confirmed to the Free Press, on Monday, June 29. The third year is a team option.
The 27-year-old wing arrived from the Chicago Bulls at the trade deadline in a three-team deal (that also included the Minnesota Timberwolves) and averaged 8.6 points and 2.5 assists through 25 games, including three starts.
THE LATEST MOVES: Pistons trade rumors, updates and NBA free agency news
Though an adductor injury caused him to miss most of the playoffs after Game 4, Huerter found his groove at the end of the regular season, averaging 12.8 points, 3.2 assists, 1.7 steals and knocking down 36.8% of his 3-point attempts through the Pistons' final 12 games. He only played six minutes in their final 11 postseason games combined, however, due to the injury.
Once regarded as a sharpshooter, Huerter has only knocked down 32.4% of his attempts over his last two seasons. But he hit 37.5% of his attempts through his first seven NBA seasons, making him a high-upside signing if he can rediscover his touch. Huerter otherwise is also a sharp passer and finisher and will give them depth on the wing.
OPTION-AL THINKING: Pistons reportedly pick up options for Daniss Jenkins, Tolu Smith
Because the Pistons have Huerter's Bird rights, they don't need to create cap space to re-sign him. They have the option of remaining over the cap and, if they wish, re-signing Tobias Harris, making a trade and using their $15 million mid-level exception while retaining the ability to sign Huerter.
The Pistons have been busy in the days leading up to the start of the free agency negotiation period, which begins at 6 p.m. June 30. They drafted Stanford guard Ebuka Okorie with the No. 17 overall pick, purchased a second-round pick to draft Virginia big man Ugonna Onyenso at No. 53, traded Isaiah Stewart to the Memphis Grizzlies, acquired Isaiah Joe from the Oklahoma City Thunder and picked up team options for Daniss Jenkins and Tolu Smith.
