Allen Park — Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell provided several updates on the status of injured players to begin training camp in Allen Park.
The most notable update is that All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph is not expected to be ready for the team's season opener against the New Orleans Saints.
"To me, if we got him back for the first game, that would be a bonus," Campbell said. "That would be like, 'Woah, OK.' I don't expect that. I'm not looking for that. I feel like he's more on the (Brian) Branch plan a little bit, and that's if everything goes well and everything goes according to plan."
Joseph, who has been battling a knee injury since last year's training camp and missed 11 games last season, was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list over the weekend. Campbell said he can't give a "true answer" as to when they expect Joseph back.
"Everything that I told you in the spring, it still applies to that. We've been working to this, but we're still in this, 'OK, he's running on ground, man, we're starting to do change of directions, some of this,'" Campbell said. "But we're not going to grind this for another two or three weeks, man. So, I cannot give you a true answer."
▶ S Brian Branch: Campbell said Branch, who tore his Achilles last December, hasn't faced any setbacks but probably won't practice for at least another month.
"Take it as it comes, and we'll see. I'm sure late training camp, maybe early September, he can start practicing. We'll see," Campbell said.
▶ TE Tyler Conklin: Conklin was placed on the PUP list with a calf problem that's been bothering him since the spring. Campbell said he expects Conklin to return in about two weeks: "Conklin is probably going to be about two weeks here, somewhere in there," Campbell said.
"He's running. He got a little calf back in the spring. We're hopeful, no setbacks. We're trying to be smart with him, but hopefully get him back as soon as possible so we can get some reps on him."
▶ OL Christian Mahogany: Mahogany was placed on the Non-Football Injury list on Tuesday. Campbell didn't specify Mahogany's injury, but doesn't expect him to be sidelined for long: "Mahogany needs a couple days, and then he'll be ready," Campbell said.
▶ DB Christian Izien: Izien was placed on the Non-Football Injury list on Tuesday. Campbell said Izien "just had a little flu bug." He anticipates Izien returning to the practice field on Friday.
