In preparation for next season, many of Kentucky’s players are training with personal basketball trainers and have posted videos of doing so. Malachi Moreno, Braydon Hawthorne, Justin McBride, and Zoom Diallo are players who have posted training videos over the past two weeks.
Incoming transfer guard Jerone Morton joined that list on Thursday, but instead of training in California or Texas, Morton is training a stone’s throw from Lexington with former Wildcat and fan favorite Dominque Hawkins.
Hawkins shared some photos of the two working in the gym on social media. “Trust the work,” Hawkins captions the post.
Just as Morton, Hawkins dreamed of playing for Kentucky as a kid growing up in the state. After an impressive performance in the KHSAA Sweet 16, he earned a scholarship and played four years at Kentucky. While he played just a handful of minutes during his first three seasons, he was an important piece off the bench as a senior in 2016-17, being selected to the SEC All-Tournament team.
While they are different players, the role Hawkins played for that 2016-17 team could be similar to what Morton is asked to play for this year’s team: a steady presence off the bench who can provide a spark.
It is always cool to see Kentucky players of different eras coming together.
Players will begin to arrive on campus the first week of June. Not too far away.
