PHILADELPHIA -- Naturally, when players go down with injuries, others step up and produce in their place. The Philadelphia 76ers have gotten very familiar with the phrase "next man up" over the years as they have been ravaged by injuries on the floor.
Tuesday's win over the Memphis Grizzlies showed that mentality for the Sixers as Kelly Oubre Jr., Cam Payne, VJ Edgecombe, and others all stepped up to lead Philadelphia to a victory. With Tyrese Maxey now joining Joel Embiid and Paul George on the sidelines, the Sixers will turn to veteran Oubre to take on more responsibility on the offensive end.
Oubre had 30 points and 12 rebounds in the win. One has to wonder if that's going to be the norm for him now until they get healthy again.
"Not really," said Oubre. "Obviously, being more aggressive. Making sure that we get shots on goal and we execute our plays and things like that, and yes, I do step into more of, you know, I get plays called more here and there, and then just kind of the pressure of making shots to keep the team in the game, or making plays to make sure that guys come back, or whatever the flow of the game is. I'm in a role of that sort."
Oubre has always been a player who can score the basketball, but he just wants to impact winning. That is the biggest thing for him at this point in time is making sure the Sixers stay afloat and climb into the top 6 of the East and out of the play-in tournament.
"At the end of the day, man, I'm still trying to play the right way, still trying to be efficient, still trying to get my teammates involved and just elevate my game in different areas, and make shots for sure," Oubre finished. "So, I don't really look at it like that (being the No. 1 guy), but I just want to be efficient and just be an asset on the court."
The Sixers will take on the Detroit Pistons on Thursday on the road.
