PISCATAWAY – After his team won the Eastern Conference finals, New York Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns made a surprise visit to his hometown, where he watched a Little League baseball game, took photos and signed autographs.
“I couldn’t believe he was there,” said Councilman Frank Uhrin, president of the Piscataway Little League. “He came to watch one of the Little League games, and I saw him down there and went over to talk to him.”
The Piscataway Little League Facebook page featured photos of Towns and Uhrin at the ballfield with the caption: “Surprise guest at the field tonight, Karl-Anthony Towns!”
Towns grew up in Piscataway and still has family in town but didn’t know he planned to stop by the ballfield. Uhrin said his sons went to school with Towns’ father, so Towns knew him.
Uhrin said he told Towns he has been a Knicks fan since the 1970s when Walt “Clyde” Frazier and Willis Reed played for the team.
“I wished him a lot of luck and told him I’m very proud of him,” Uhrin said. “I was just happy to see him.”
The Knicks will play in the NBA Finals starting next week against the winner of the Western Conference finals, where the Oklahoma City Thunder lead the San Antonio Spurs 3-2 in the series. The last time the Knicks reached the Finals was 1999, and the last championship came in 1973.
“He’s excited about how the Knicks are playing. It’s been 26 years since they’ve been in the Finals,” Uhrin said. “It’s really great.”
Towns stayed at the ballfield for about an hour and a half until the game ended. Uhrin said Towns was cordial with kids and parents, taking photos and signing autographs. “It was really nice,” Uhrin said. “It was very kind of him.”
