It's do or die time for Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson.
The Wildcats' veteran has been slated for a breakout season for years but has fallen short since 2023. Thankfully, he has his original coordinator, Collin Klein, back calling plays for him next season.
And thus, many believe he will finally have his career season in 2026. ESPN has been among the biggest fans of Kansas State next season, particularly for what they believe Johnson will emerge as. They named him one of the 40 most important players in the country next season, illustrating his significance to the game plan and the program's success.
"Take Johnson, a dynamic dual-threat and former blue-chipper with a solid arm and excellent mobility and sack avoidance, and make him 10% more like Collin Klein, and you have something special," the article wrote.
Johnson has had a decent but underwhelming career in Manhattan, KS, thus far. He's compiled 5,576 passing yards, 48 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions, while rushing for 1,378 yards and 22 touchdowns. Program records broken and boasts a dual-threat play style that anyone could admire from a distance.
But it's the lack of success that's made some - even Johnson - pause at giving him his flowers. He's been nowhere near a conference title despite consistently being among the favorites to acquire it. And while Johnson's play style is attractive, it hasn't exactly been the most productive. He sometimes gets hesitant in his play, either failing to utilize his legs or failing to push the ball down the field.
His inability to truly elevate last season was one of the major stumbling blocks that held Kansas State back from conference championship contention. Johnson thrives in play-action and the short-pass game, but that isn't enough to stretch the offense on the perimeter.
But alas, that's why Klein is back in the building. He's slotted to help the Wildcats' signal-caller return to the form that made people believe he'd be a conference star for years to come.
