We are about one month away from getting college football back on our screens across the nation.
And Kansas State fans will finally get to see the squad that's been hyped up for months despite the massive three-month overhaul. The Wildcats are still anticipated to be a Big 12 contender, falling just outside of BYU, Texas Tech, and Utah in most people's projected conference rankings.
There's one reason many believe the team will be successful in 2026: their schedule.
CBS Sports ranked the easiest opponents in the nation, listing NC State and Texas Tech as the only teams with simpler ones.
The article wrote:
"In a Big 12 race without a clear monster beyond Texas Tech, K-State's path under first-year coach Collin Klein and veteran playmaker Avery Johnson is about timing, health and execution. If Klein's offense hits, this schedule is good enough to make the Wildcats one of this season's potential comeback stories. The Wildcats' lone ranked opponent is Houston, and they'll miss Utah, BYU and Texas Tech. This sets up beautifully for a rebound."
Kansas State finished with six wins last year after being projected for a generational season. The team was predicted to notch a postseason spot and top the conference, but quickly flamed out after a disastrous 1-3 start. They were able to rebound and avoid a losing season, but it made some a little hesitant to trust them to fulfil high expectations.
In particular, quarterback Avery Johnson. He's been predicted for a breakout season since 2023, not having anywhere near the success people thought he would by this point. Records and decent statistics aplenty, with a style of play that attracts fans and analysts alike. Yet, there's very little success to show for it. 19 wins with no postseason appearances or Big 12 titles are below his own expectations.
Then again, that's what Klein is back for. The program legend has helped usher in two of Kansas State's three Big 12 championships, once as a quarterback and once as an offensive coordinator. He helped Johnson during his freshman season, putting together a campaign so strong that he was projected to be a Heisman favorite for years to come.
