The Kansas City Royals were defeated by the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, losing by a final score of 4-3. The Royals fell to 20-30 with the defeat, as they remain in last place in the American League Central standings. However, Michael Wacha pitched well once again despite the loss.
Wacha turned in six innings of two-run (one earned run) baseball. He also struck out eight hitters while surrendering six hits and two walks.
The Royals have struggled without question, but Wacha has quietly enjoyed a strong individual campaign. The veteran right-handed hurler has pitched to a 2.70 ERA in his 10 outings on the mound. He has also struck out 55 hitters in 63.1 innings of work.
Overall, the Royals starting rotation has been rather inconsistent. Wacha has been the most reliable starter on the ball club. He is doing everything he can to help the team, but Wacha is not receiving much help from his teammates.
If Kansas City wants to turn things around, the team is going to need more consistency from other players on the roster. Nevertheless, they certainly will not complain about Wacha's performance.
The Royals' bullpen allowed two more runs following Wacha's departure from the contest. With that being said, the Royals' pitching was not to blame for the defeat. The offense continued to struggle on Wednesday against the Red Sox.
Kansas City was able to record eight hits in the game. Driving in runs was a concern, though. They ultimately scored three runs in the matchup.
Salvador Perez had three hits, a home run and an RBI while Jac Caglianone recorded two hits. Meanwhile, Elias Diaz had only one hit, but it was a home run.
The lineup has been a problem for the ball club. Bobby Witt Jr. is still performing well, but scoring runs has been a struggle for the team overall. They will attempt to turn things around sooner rather than later.
On Friday, Kansas City will begin a three-game series at home against the Seattle Mariners. It will be a difficult series. The Royals need to figure things out soon or they may end up selling at the trade deadline.
First pitch for Friday night's contest between the Mariners and Royals is scheduled for 7:40 PM EST in Kansas City as the Royals look to bounce back as soon as possible.
