Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith has overcome adversity on and off the football field to become one of the interior linemen in the league.
The two-time Super Bowl champion appeared on former Chiefs center Mitch Morse's live podcast, In Good Company with Mitch Morse, last week. He responded to a special guest question from Chiefs Wire's Ed Easton Jr. regarding what advice he'd give his younger self today before entering the NFL.
"I think if I could go back in time and talk to myself, I would reassure myself." Said Smith, "Jeremiah 29:11 for I know the plans I have for you. So Lord our God, plans to prosper you, not to harm you. Plans to give you hope in the future and be like, Hey, bro, read your Bible. Like, calm down. You know, God's got you. Like, bro, you almost died, but you came back and played football like, two years in a row."
After starting at left tackle during his sophomore season at Tennessee, the team medical staff discovered blood clots in Smith's lungs and ruled him out indefinitely. The issue was identified in February 2018, before the start of spring practice. His condition created a cloud of uncertainty heading into the 2021 NFL Draft, causing him to drop to the sixth round.
"You're gonna be fine if you can survive that, you know, if you can deal with the heartbreak, the loss, of losing your mom, and dealing with health issues, like dog, you think God's gonna let you down right now?" Said Smith, "You think your story is gonna be over right here? No, like he's got so many great things planned for you. So just stay faithful. Man, just work, like I said, attitude, effort, controllables. Man, just work. Do what you can do."
Smith has elevated to become a top offensive guard in the league, earning consecutive Pro Bowl selections.
