LAWRENCE — Kansas baseball regained some momentum this past week and has gained some ground in Monday’s update of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll top 25.

The Jayhawks (39-16, 22-8 in Big 12) captured the Big 12 Conference regular season title with a series win on the road against BYU, and are now ranked No. 16 in the nation. They were No. 17 in the nation this past week. Looking ahead, KU’s first game in the Big 12 tournament won’t be until the quarterfinals on Thursday against a to be determined opponent.

Elsewhere in the Big 12, there’s No. 11 West Virginia, No. 21 Oklahoma State, No. 22 Arizona State and No. 23 Cincinnati. KU wouldn’t face any of those teams in its upcoming quarterfinals matchup. Kansas would go up against either Baylor, BYU or Texas Tech.

Regardless, the likelihood that the Jayhawks will host a NCAA regional this season has risen in recent days. Coach Dan Fitzgerald and his staff have brought the program its first regular season conference title since 1949, and that hasn’t gone unnoticed. Performing well this week in the Big 12 tournament in Arizona, though, could do a lot to solidify things.
