East Lansing — It was an epic performance by the current Mr. Basketball winner and a likely future one during a Division 1 semifinal between East Lansing and Birmingham Brother Rice on Friday.
With 1.5 seconds left, senior and Mr. Basketball winner K.J. Torbert drilled a fadeaway 3-pointer to give defending champion East Lansing a 55-52 win over Brother Rice.
The future was certainly on display, as Brother Rice freshman sensation Jordan McDaniel wowed the crowd, scoring a game-high 31 points to nearly single-handedly win the game for his team.
McDaniel tied the game on a 3-point play with 15.8 seconds left at 52-52, and then East Lansing put the ball in the hands of Torbert.
He worked the clock down and hit a 3-pointer from wing to send East Lansing into Saturday’s state championship game against Rockford.
Torbert finished with 23 points.
