Justin Thomas has always looked up to Rory McIlroy throughout his PGA Tour career.
When Thomas came out on the PGA Tour in 2015, McIlroy was already a four-time major champion.
And since then, both players have gone on to win two majors each – two PGA Championships for the American and two Masters for the Northern Irishman.
Rory McIlroy has been the best golfer in the game over the past decade or so.
Meanwhile, Justin Thomas has shown flashes of brilliance as well, but he has been nowhere near as consistent as the six-time major champion.

The 32-year-old American is a huge admirer of the reigning Masters champion.
And the feeling is very much mutual. McIlroy has praised Thomas on numerous occasions for his impact on the popularity of the PGA Tour, and indeed the professional game in general.
However, Thomas believes that McIlroy really is a class apart from the rest.
Justin Thomas says Rory McIlroy hit a shot that nobody else could at Quail Hollow
Thomas made an appearance in the Sky Sports commentary booth during day two of the Truist Championship.
And while talking about McIlroy’s win at Augusta National, he made a comment on a shot that the Northern Irishman hit on the par-five 15th hole at Quail Hollow.
“Yeah, you know, it’s a place that suits Rory (Augusta National),” Thomas said.
“I mean, what course isn’t good for Rory McIlroy, right?
“But man, that place is so good for him. Just hitting a high draw that flies about 320, 330 yards in the air. Like, that obviously plays well at a lot of places, but so well there.
“It is one of those things that a lot of people and media, whatever, said once he does win, he could win a lot of these.

“And I mean, look where he just drove it there (on the 15th at Quail Hollow). Like, I don’t think anybody else is driving that there on 15 this week. So he does unbelievable stuff with a golf ball.
“It’s impressive to watch and I’ve always respected, you know, the kind of person he is. He’s always been great to me.”
Rory McIlroy’s superpower has reached another level in 2026
McIlroy absolutely launched his drive on the 15th at Quail Hollow down the middle of the fairway.
His ball traveled 332 yards, mostly through the air, and he was left with just an iron into the green from around 250 yards out.
Most players were left with around 280-300 yards into the green for their second shots.
McIlroy has a way of making driving the ball look far too easy.
He is ranked first in driving distance at the Truist Championship this week, with an average drive of 340.4 yards.
The 37-year-old is ranked second in strokes gained off the tee and when he’s swinging like he is now, he’s a very hard man to beat.
If Rory McIlroy starts to hole more putts during the weekend at Quail Hollow, there’s every chance that he will record his 31st PGA Tour victory on Sunday.
