German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann publicly clashed with three of his players regarding effort and determination following Ecuador's 2-1 comeback victory at New York/New Jersey Stadium.

Thursday's Group E finale presented a compelling game, with Germany having already secured first place, while Ecuador faced a must-win scenario to progress after a disappointing tournament start. Germany opened the scoring controversially through Leroy Sane within two minutes, but were swiftly answered by Nilson Angulo.

Ecuador kept creating problems for Germany, and Gonzalo Plata emerged as the match-winner late on, netting the crucial goal to guarantee their advancement. Ecuador's head coach reacted with an emotional celebration as he sprinted toward the stands to locate his wife, but within the German camp, tensions emerged, as per The Mirror US.

Germany had nothing at stake in the contest, but Nagelsmann hoped his squad would maintain its winning form heading into the knockout rounds. Meanwhile, it was do-or-die for Ecuador, which has now prolonged its tournament participation in North America.

Speaking postgame, a disappointed German squad reflected on the afternoon and acknowledged that Ecuador earned the victory. "The atmosphere was amazing. You could feel that there were many people from Ecuador," captain Joshua Kimmich told reporters.

"The difference today was that the opponent wanted to win more than us, and you can really feel it, especially in the second half. This is why they won today, really deserved."

Midfielder Jamal Musiala, Kimmich's Germany and Bayern Munich teammate, added, "Ecuador were perhaps a bit more hungry to win the game. The intensity and aggression of their play were high. We have to learn from this defeat and prepare properly for the important phase of the tournament. We can't afford to make these mistakes again."

Man of the moment Deniz Undav then offered his assessment, adding, "I had the feeling they wanted it more than us. Ecuador were more aggressive and sharper than we were. That's something we need to learn from and draw the right conclusions.

"We weren't as direct in our play and we didn't create as many chances. We have to perform better and improve. But there's no time to dwell on it – we're back in action on Monday already."

However, when Nagelsmann was questioned about Undav's verdict specifically, he didn't hesitate to share his view. "Ecuador wanted it more than we did? That's nonsense," he said.

The loss may have held little significance for Nagelsmann, but he was already frustrated about the uncertainty surrounding the Round of 32 opponent following the group victory after the second match.

"We got off to a great start," Nagelsmann said. "Unfortunately, right after scoring, we started committing tactical suicide with our positioning.

"That makes things difficult. Ecuador had everything to play for, and you could tell -- they had their foot on the gas. But I also can't say that any of my players didn't give it their all. That's too simplistic."
