The New York Mets' uneven start to the season has hit another skid.
Four-time All-Star Juan Soto injured his calf while running the bases Friday against the San Francisco Giants. Soto, who hit a single off Tyler Mahle, exited the game and did not return. Tyrone Taylor took Soto's place in the outfield and proceeded to go hitless in four at-bats.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed postgame Soto has right calf tightness and will get an MRI Saturday morning.
“You never want to lose a guy like that,” Mets second baseman Marcus Semien said of Soto, per MLB.com. “I don’t know how bad it is yet, but I know he works extremely hard, and he’s going to get himself back as soon as possible.”
Here's how the injury occurred:
Soto has been durable since signing his massive 15-year, $765 million deal with the Mets in December 2024. The former World Series champion missed only seven games over the last two seasons, and he got off to a hot start this year by leading the Mets in batting average (.355) and hits (11).
Imaging results have not come back for Soto yet, at least publicly. Those will go a long way in determining how long, if at all, Soto has to miss.
