I could never throw down, but at 5-11 I was still able to get the ball over the rim jumping off my left foot. And I was a very mediocre athlete. Anyone 6-2 or taller has no excuse, IMO.

That said, doing any kind of dunk in a game is an entirely different skill than dunking when no one's around. You don't have time to think or stabilize your body. It's why J-Rich needs to permanently end his showboating dunk attempts. Just because he can do that silly stuff in practice doesn't mean he can pull it off in a game. In the NBA, if you're by yourself at the hoop, you need to shoot 100 percent. Period. Take the easy 2.

A dunk and a 360 dunk aren't necessarily the same thing. :p

10 to 1 Yao Ming can't do a 360 dunk.

Actually, at 6-2 the ability to dunk probably isn't a function of height, length or jumping ability. At that height, size of hand will be the determining factor, IMO. If you can't grip the ball in one hand you can't dunk at 6-2 unless you have incredible leaping ability and even then it's difficult. Nate Robinson is even shorter and he has small hands but the guy's a freak.

When I was a younger lad I could dunk the ball--not flashy, but I could do it. And I'm between 6' and 6'1".

My point is that at your height and above there really isn't a lot of jumping involved. The average male 6-1 or 6-2 can jump high enough to dunk if they can maintain their hold on the basketball.

I'm 6'2" have really long arms and back when I played regularly could palm the ball with ease. Just pathetic leaping ability.

If you're saying you can't dunk, I'd have to say that you're probably a fairly rare exception. I've seen one-legged players your height and smaller dunk with ease. I guess that's not proof, I offer it only to counterbalance your example. Sorry to hear about your pathetic leaping ability but on the plus side, you're probably going to still have functional knees when you reach my age.:)

Yeah, luckily my long arms help compensate for my lack of leaping ability/lateral quickness. :)

If i really worked at it I probably could dunk, but it wouldn't be easy.

at 5'10 and never particularly svelt, i could dunk a volleyball. of course, that was when i was 19...

i can't even remember what it feels like to grab the rim 22 years later...

Yep, I'm 41 now and I've added a defensive end to my weight. Ain't no flying time for me these days.

On that ;play, I was more impressed with the steal than the dunk. Right now the Suns ver rarely do the same kind of sneek behind the player steals. That was something we've never had since Marion left.

That's ridiculous. Even someone 6' 2" needs a two-foot vertical. Do you mean NBA players, or run-of-the-mill weekend warriors? A two-foot vertical is quite rare among normal people, even those in good shape.

NBA players. And a 24" vert is pretty weak among professional athletes.

Nailed it. I'm 5'8 and back in my prime (it's still tough to admit I'm over the hill these days) I could jump high enough to dunk but never could because I couldn't hold on to the damn ball. I did manage to get a tip dunk but the ball was already there so that made it infinitely easier.

Did Childress really choose to wear #1 or did Sarver just find a clever way to clear out the remaining inventory of Stoudemire jerseys without having to mark them down? There's probably a busy seamstress in town right now. There must have been a dusty box of Marion jerseys just found too explaining why Lawal chose 31. ;)

I would imagine Josh chose #1 because its the number he wore while in ATLANTA before leaving for Greece.

LOL, it is difficult to deal with when you really think about it.
I'm 5'8" on a good day with shoes on and i was a 155lb lightening quick jumping jack back when i played pick up ball. I could get my fingers over the rim also. Thing is, i was a very good rebounder even against 6 footers. I was fearless, anticipated the miss, could jump thru the gym and like i said, i was always the fastest dude on the court(even in terms of vertical speed and going back up as soon as i came down). Like Marion's rebounding skills.... i could outquick these guys, sneak inside and meet them at the top with hops. Had a 36.5 vert....now my 41 yr old 180 lb butt cant even reach the bottom of the net...

I played decent D,had a great jumper, and a quick cross over to get to the rim but my weakness was making passes in traffic and for a little man that doesn't get it done.

Ahhh the good ole days.....

I love that we've got a bunch of us ASFN old men in here giving out our scouting report's from 15 yrs ago. :D

Cmon. I am older than you, heavier than you, same height as you, could never do what you say you could do in your prime. . . AND I CAN STILL GET ALOT OF NET!

Haha is that motivation? Another factor that has slowed me down is that due to my job(always on my feet for the last 18 yrs) is that i developed plantar fasciitus. Really bad in my left foot and a minor case in my right foot. My feet cant take the pounding and its very painful.
