MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins want to extend the contract of middle linebacker Jordyn Brooks.
How confident is Brooks that a deal will get done?
"I don't know," Brooks said after Dolphins OTA practice on Tuesday, May 19. "I mean, it can go either way honestly, but for me, I'm just controlling what I can control. Play football. I'm blessed to do it and so I'm going to just keep approaching it that way."
It can go either way. Well, yeah, we suppose. But that certainly doesn't sound like they're close.
Brooks, 28, led the NFL in tackles last season, with 183.
Coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan have basically said publicly that Brooks represents everything they want in a Miami Dolphin.
Does that mean Miami is willing to go too far for a player at a non-premium position?
We'll see.
Brooks was thrilled to see running back De'Von Achane land a new deal.
"Yeah, man, Achane getting his deal, that's something that needed to happen right away,' Brooks said. "Probably our best player on the team, just his skill set and the way he's played for us the last two years since I've been here, he earned every bit of that. Seeing him get that done, I was excited. Bringing him back and obviously all the guys that we lost, having him back made me feel a lot better about where we're going in the future."
Brooks believes new coach Jeff Hafley is instilling the right culture.
"Just pushing that standard of all-out effort every play, doing the little things right, trying to establish that to kind of change the culture around here," Brooks said.
What about the culture needs to change?
"It's a lot of things, right?" Brooks said. "When you don't make the playoffs two years in a row, there's a lot of things that need to be fixed, but I think the number one thing is just the mindset of the collective group."
Does Brooks like that the Dolphins have publicly identified him, De'Von Achane and Aaron Brewer as future franchise "pillars?"
"I look at that as challenge accepted," Brooks said. :Like I said, it's not easy being a pillar. You got to do things the right way all the time, but it's a challenge that I accept. I'm excited to take on that challenge if I'm going to be here for the future, one hundred percent, I'm all in."
