Former Masters champion Jordan Spieth is staying close to the leaders during the second round of this year’s tournament.

Through the first 14 holes of his second round, Spieth is at even par, just five shots behind leader Rory McIlroy. After an opening-round 72, the 2015 Masters champion birdied his first hole on Friday, April 10, then parred 10 straight holes before suffering a bogey on No. 12.

However, Spieth got a little help from the gallery. Spieth pulled a tee shot deep down the left side of the fairway. Television coverage showed the ball heading into the trees before suddenly bouncing out into the middle of the fairway.

Turns out, Spieth struck a Masters patron. “What a bounce,” the commentator said, per ESPN. “I think that hit that patron’s hand.”

As he walked toward his ball, Spieth made sure to make a detour to check on the patron. Spieth showed his appreciation by presenting him a signed glove.

Spieth, a three-time major champion, is well-known for taking adventurous paths to the hole. In June 2025, he nearly took out several fans at The Memorial Tournament with a shot from the round. Still, he pulled off a par.

Also, he hit spectators with shots during the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the 2023 The Players Championship. Then, there was the viral moment at last year’s Masters when Spieth accidentally hit a patron in the groin with his putter on the way to the first tee.

Spieth, who has 13 career PGA Tour wins, claimed the Masters by four strokes at age 21. He hasn’t won a major since the 2017 Open Championship. Spieth’s last PGA Tour win came at the 2022 RBC Heritage. He has collected $67.3 million in career earnings.

The Masters continues through Sunday, April 12. The third and fourth rounds will be televised on CBS from 2 p.m.-7 p.m. ET on Saturday and Sunday and streamed from noon-7 p.m. ET on Paramount+, Masters.com and the Masters app.
