The whole day was a nightmare for Jordan Spieth, who came nowhere near the cut line and is going home from The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale.

Nothing summarized that more than his three-putt adventure from less than four feet away.

Spieth entered the par-5 17th three shots back from the projected cut line at the time.

He struggled his way to the green, and he ended up 3 feet and 11 inches from the hole to putt for double bogey.

Not ideal, especially considering his score relative to the cut heading into a par-5, but the best he could do was make the short putt and get the double bogey.

Spieth missed the double bogey putt, though.

Then he missed the triple bogey putt.

He ended up with a 9 on the par-5.

Social media users pointed to the "yips," that dreaded mental block.

Whatever the reason, this was painful to watch:

Grueling watch. https://t.co/Chw21xOZ8Lpic.twitter.com/blEXBBZShN

Spieth has had a few other on-course nightmares in his career.

At his best, he's a great player. But when things go wrong for Spieth, they sometimes go very, very wrong.
