The Minnesota Vikings enter a pressure filled preseason as the team looks to improve from a disappointing season a year ago. The Vikings' win total dropped by five wins as the team fell from a 14-3 record to a 9-8 season in 2025.
For the team to improve, it will need to get better on offense. For context, the Vikings won a game with 3.0 net passing yards against the Detroit Lions after backup quarterback Max Brosmer threw for 51 yards to his -48 sack yards.
The team was better with starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy, but not enough to reach its full potential. McCarthy went for 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and 6.7 yards per attempt on a 57.6% completion rate.
There's reason to believe the Vikings offense can improve in 2026. One analyst discussed a player who could help facilitate such improvement.
Rowan Fisher-Shotton of Newsweek named the Vikings breakout player to watch in the upcoming season. Fisher-Shotton named star wide receiver Jordan Addison as someone in line for a great season in a contract year. Here was some of the reasoning on why Addison could have a great year this year.
"Addison played through a suspension and injuries last year, and his production took a big hit. He finished with just 610 receiving yards and three touchdowns on 42 catches across 14 games, all career lows. That’s a notable dropoff from his 2023 rookie season, when he posted 911 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 70 catches, seeing over 100 targets.
Addison at one point looked like he was going to emerge as one of the NFL‘s next elite wide receivers, then he fell off. 2026 is the year he puts it all together, and potentially sees his first Pro Bowl next to Jefferson in what everybody’s expecting to be a resurgent year for Murray.
There’s also financial pressure on Addison. Minnesota already exercised his fifth-year option, locking him in through 2027, but a big season would put him in position for a big payday down the line."

Contract years often bring the best out of NFL stars. With a big year, they can secure another four seasons with their current NFL team. If they falter, it could mean searching for another place to play.
Addison has not had much trouble producing on the field. Given the Vikings' addition of wide receiver Jauan Jennings and the retention of star tight end T.J. Hockenson, Addison could see plenty of favorable matchups.
We'll keep an eye on the star player as he approaches a pivotal season in his career.
