JONESVILLE — Competitive cheer has been a major part of Myla Thompson's life for as long as she can remember, and now the Jonesville graduate will have the opportunity to continue that journey at the collegiate level.
Thompson is set to join the Spring Arbor University competitive cheer program, where she plans to pursue a degree in health and exercise science while competing for the Cougars.

A standout member of Jonesville's sideline and competitive cheer programs, Thompson said continuing to compete was a natural decision.
“It's been a really big part of my life growing up,” Thompson said. “I used to climb up our walls and was always moving and doing all of that stuff, so I'm very excited to continue to contribute to a team.”
Thompson chose Spring Arbor for several reasons, including its proximity to home, campus environment and faith-based campus.
“It's pretty close to home,” Thompson said. “I love the background and the Christian part of it. The campus is just beautiful.”
Academically, Thompson plans to study health and exercise science with hopes of eventually working in the medical field.
“I really want to be in the medical world, so I'm hoping to continue to study for physical therapy,” Thompson said.
Thompson leaves Jonesville after compiling an impressive list of athletic and academic accomplishments. She earned Cascades Conference all-conference honors, first-team all-district recognition, first-team all-county honors, second-team all-region status, Tri-County first-team honors and was selected as a athlete of the week nominee.
She also excelled in the classroom, earning honor roll recognition, academic all-conference honors, membership in the National Technical Honor Society and her certified nursing assistant certification.
Competing for Jonesville coach Christie Campbell, Thompason and her teammates enjoyed a successful 2025-26 season despite a small roster, earning first-place finishes at the Columbia Central Charity Invitational and the Hillsdale Invitational Division 4 competition. The Comets finished tied for sixth in the Cascades Conference, placed fourth at districts and ninth at regionals. Thompson was among the team's top performers throughout the season.
When reflecting on her high school career, Thompson pointed to her junior-year district competition and the bonds formed with her teammates as some of her favorite memories.
“Probably my junior year districts — it was so much fun,” Thompson said. “And then this year we just had a very strong team, and it was great.”
That junior season saw the team host a Division 4 district postseason tournament, and the Comets placed third to earn medals and move onto the regional round of the MHSAA postseason. 2026 marked the team's second trip to regionals in a row.
As she prepares to begin her collegiate career, Thompson expressed gratitude for the support she has received throughout her athletic journey.
“Just thank you for coming and supporting me,” Thompson said when addressing her family, coaches and supporters.
Spring Arbor University is a private Christian university located in Spring Arbor, Michigan. The school competes in the NAIA as a member of the Crossroads League and offers more than 70 areas of study while sponsoring a wide variety of varsity athletic programs.
The Spring Arbor competitive cheer program is coming off a successful season in which five athletes earned All-Crossroads League honors. Head coach Hannah Philson was also named the Crossroads League Coach of the Year after helping lead the Cougars to one of the program's strongest recent campaigns.
