Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow will always be a topic of conversation around the Bengals. From perceived unhappiness to contract restructuring, anything that happens involving the Bengals quarterback is newsworthy.

During this minicamp, Burrow has taken a different tone with the media than he has in the past. His standoffish personality has given way to confidence as he predicts Super Bowls and says this is the best roster he has played with in Cincinnati.

Now, another part of his personality is starting to be noticed by his teammates. Joe Burrow’s influence over the team has always been obvious. As the quarterback and one of the best players on the team, he sets the tone and can shift the vibe around the team with a sentence.

Everyone has seen the clip of him talking with Zac Taylor after Cincinnati’s win over Tennessee in 2024. Taylor approached Burrow to have a positive conversation, sensing some dissatisfaction. Burrow responded with a direct rebuke of the team, saying it played poorly despite the win.

Defensive lineman Jonathan Allen and offensive lineman Dalton Risner discussed Burrow’s leadership with the media following Tuesday’s practice, saying he is a natural leader who has often kept teammates accountable and set the standard for championship-level play.

"Whether it be calling guys out, holding himself accountable, grinding before or after practice."

Dalton Risner said he's really enjoyed watching Joe Burrow's leadership the past nine weeks.

There could very well be a sense of urgency from Burrow, as he knows the importance of this season, which feels like it could send the organization in one of two directions. Burrow calling out anyone who is not meeting the standards of a championship team is good news for a team that has been searching for leadership for what feels like multiple seasons.

Many Bengals players have mentioned the leadership of new additions such as Bryan Cook, Dexter Lawrence and Jonathan Allen. Holdovers from last season, such as Barrett Carter and Demetrius Knight Jr., have also taken a huge leap in vocal leadership as they become more comfortable playing in the NFL heading into their second season.

With all of those figures stepping up in leadership positions, it seems to confirm the talk of improved morale and heightened expectations around the team. The front office has actually gone against its common tendencies, being aggressive rather than conservative in free agency and the trade market. Now, the players know it is on them to deliver a deep playoff run or possibly even a Super Bowl to Cincinnati. The excuse of having a bad defense is no longer valid.
