Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow earned national attention with comments about his team recently.
Long story short, Burrow sounded confident about the Bengals’ chances at contention in 2026. Fans loved it. Most understood it. Some national pundits had some words for Burrow, though.
Regardless, it was pretty obvious what was going on:
Burrow was setting the tone for his locker room.
This is something Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer picked up on and praised Burrow for this week.
“I’ve always thought Burrow has a great feel for whatever his locker room needs to hear,” Breer wrote. “And I’d take what he said as putting a little urgency on a group that he thinks is good enough to chase a championship. Remember, after making consecutive AFC title games in Burrow’s second and third years, the Bengals have missed the playoffs five consecutive years.”
Indeed. Fans have been here before: Burrow gets honest or otherwise sends a certain type of message in public. The locker room gets it while outside reactions are all over the place.
Business as usual. And part of Burrow’s apparent, self-admitted growth as a leader for the team as he enters his “veteran” status as a pro.
