After being picked by the Denver Broncos in the fourth round of the NFL draft, rookie running back Jonah Coleman is walking into a crowded running back room in the NFL.
Coleman will join J.K. Dobbins and RJ Harvey in Denver's backfield, and he's poised to begin his pro career as RB3. He's eager to join the three-back rotation this summer.
“Well, obviously, just playing my role and doing what I do," Coleman said when asked about his potential role. "The leadership that I bring to the locker room, the culture, how I can ultimately add to that culture that they have… Just being able to come in and be with guys like RJ Harvey, J.K. Dobbins and stuff like that. You ultimately have a three-headed monster in the run game. I believe that’s where it starts, in the trenches.”
One big element that Coleman brings to the backfield rotation is reliable pass-blocking. The 22-year-old rookie was one of the best blocking backs in college football, and that could help him win playing time early with the Broncos.
“It’s really important," Coleman said of pass protection. "Now I get to go protect Bo Nix, and I take pride in that. I may not have all the exciting plays and all of that, but I do the dirty work. I do those things that not a lot of people pay attention to. Just being able to be well-rounded."
That willingness to do the "dirty work" will serve Coleman well as he competes for rotational playing time. He might be the third-choice option going into the season, but Coleman figures to have a promising long-term outlook in Denver.
