Randy Johnson is closer than ever to becoming a member of the New York Yankees, with only the holiday weekend likely standing in the way of a completed trade between the Yankees and Diamondbacks.

A baseball executive with knowledge of the proposal said the transaction - the five-time Cy Young winner to New York for right-hander Javier Vazquez, left-hander Brad Halsey, catching prospect Dioner Navarro and $9 million - had not officially been submitted to Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig on Thursday. But the deal is said to be in place and is expected to be reviewed by Selig, perhaps as early as Monday.

Once Selig stamps his approval on the deal, the Yankees will have a 72-hour window to have Johnson waive his no-trade clause and negotiate a contract extension. advertisement

Diamondbacks General Manager Joe Garagiola Jr. denied that a deal is done.

"Aside from confirming that we continue to talk with the Yankees, we are not confirming any of this other stuff that is out there," he said.

If the teams were to agree today, the trade still would not likely become official until next week. Selig must approve any trade that includes more than $1 million in cash and he is reported to be vacationing this week in Arizona.

Here's how the next several days could play out:

• The Yankees and Diamondbacks hammer out the final details.

• Selig receives the deal's paperwork as early as today and decides whether to OK the agreement.

• New York and Johnson agree on a contract extension. The Yankees are likely to give Johnson either a one- or two-year extension at $15 million or more per year. Johnson waives his no-trade clause.

• Players take their physicals.

• Trade is declared official.

"We'll head into (today) and see where it takes us and if things get quieter (because of the holiday) we'll get back after things on Monday," Garagiola said.

Contrary to reports, there are indications the Diamondbacks aren't necessarily looking to immediately trade Vazquez, who has said he'd prefer to remain with an East Coast team, should the deal go through. As a player being traded in the middle of a multi-year contract, Vazquez has the right to demand a trade following the 2005 season.

The Yankees have been trying to acquire Johnson since last summer, but were unable to work out a deal with Arizona before the July 31 trade deadline. Then, a three-team blockbuster between the Diamondbacks, Yankees and Dodgers collapsed last week because LA pulled out.

The Diamondbacks, however, are believed to still be interested in LA's Shawn Green, and the Dodgers are reportedly interested in Navarro, 20, who split time between Triple-A and Double-A last season.

Green, a former client of Diamondbacks CEO-elect Jeffrey Moorad, was one of 10 players involved in last week's proposed trade.

New York landed Vazquez last winter and agreed to a four-year, $45 million deal. The $9 million the Yankees would include would help defray the $34.5 million left on his contract.
