The Red Sox’ start to the 2026 season has been abysmal. They’re 13-21 through their first 34 games, injuries have plagued the pitching staff, the offense has struggled and a turnaround doesn’t seem imminent.
Fans have booed the product on the field and chanted “sell the team!” at several games. A plane flew over Fenway Park last week urging John Henry to sell the team.
Henry isn’t blind to what’s going on and understands where fans are coming from.
“Fans get frustrated,” Henry told Sports Business Journal via email. “The Sox looked terrible for (their) first 25 games. I remember a plane flying overhead when we (Liverpool) were beating Manchester United 7-0 that read ‘FSG OUT!’”
While it might seem to fans like Henry is content with a team whose starting pitchers struggle to get through the fifth inning most nights and an offense that’s batting .252 on the season, he knows winning is what’s important.
“It doesn’t mean you ignore them, it means you work harder – you don’t settle for mediocrity," Henry said. “You have to win.”
The Red Sox will try to get back in the win column on Monday night when they begin their three-game series against the Detroit Tigers. Boston will catch a break in the first game after Detroit scratched star pitcher Tarik Skubal.
