Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire has found himself in the headlines quite a few times over the last couple of weeks.

McGuire initially raised eyebrows when he fired back at Texas coach Steve Sarkisian's thinly veiled criticism, accusing the Red Raiders of playing an easy schedule in the Big 12. McGuire challenged the Longhorns to bump their Week 1 game against Texas State and schedule their longtime in-state rival.

Texas Tech megabooster Cody Campbell even offered to pay for Texas to buy out the season-opening matchup against the Bobcats. Now, McGuire has thrown even more shade.

According to OnTexasFootball writer CJ Vogel, Sarkisian told the crowd at the San Antonio Quarterback Club that the Red Raiders are close to scheduling a "major blue blood" for a home-and-home game, but it's not going to be Texas.

“It won’t be Texas because they’re scared,” McGuire said, per Vogel.

The rivalry between the Longhorns and Red Raiders is one of college football's best. The two teams played every year from 1960 to 2023, but the series is currently on hiatus since Texas moved to the SEC in 2024.

The Longhorns lead the all-time series 55-18, and with the SEC expanding to nine conference games beginning this fall, it seems the rivalry will not be renewed any time soon.
