The epic saga between San Francisco 49ers greats Joe Montana and Steve Young is well-documented.
As most know, Young replaced Montana as the 49ers quarterback and went on to be the MVP of the league and win a Super Bowl, something that Montana still hasn’t gotten over yet.
In a recent interview with CNBC’s Alex Sherman, Montana remains perplexed about why the team moved on from him to Young.
“We had just won two Super Bowls in a row, and when I left the game, we were still winning, and we were headed to three in a row,” Montana said.
“I had one of the best statistical years of my career, and he wouldn’t even let me compete for a job. I said, 'I know I can play. I know I’m better than he is, and I said, 'Just let me compete,' and he said no. I said I was not gonna sit here on the bench. That’s not how I pictured finishing my career,” Montana added.
Montana and Young still have an awkward relationship to this day because of the way their head coach, Bill Walsh, handled the situation.
Young never felt truly accepted by 49ers fans until he won his only Super Bowl, even though management still considered benching Young in favor of Montana if Montana had decided to stay, according to the new AMC documentary about the team.
But in the end, it worked out for both parties.
