It may not be welcome news for some 49ers fans, but Joe Montana is rooting for the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl. Like many viewers across the country, Montana is hoping Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold — the first USC quarterback to ever start in a Super Bowl — ends the night with a championship.

Montana made his comments while attending the premiere of Rise of the 49ers, a docuseries highlighting San Francisco’s dominance during the 1980s. The four-time Super Bowl champion said he’s drawn to Darnold’s journey and what he’s overcome, even while acknowledging that New England quarterback Drake Maye and the Patriots won’t make things easy.

“I look at what he's been through,” Montana told KPIX-TV reporter Matt Lively. “The last two teams he played for he's won 28 games. With all he's been through, I'd like to see him win.”

Earlier in the day, Montana also shared his pick on ESPN’s Pat McAfee Show, making it clear where his allegiance lies.“I'm an NFC guy most of the time anyway, but I'm all about Sam. He's a good guy, a good player. I'm happy for him,” he said.

Darnold spent last season with the Minnesota Vikings, leading the team to a 14–3 record. The year prior, he was in San Francisco as Brock Purdy’s backup on a 49ers team that reached the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl 60 will take place Feb. 8. The Rise of the 49ers premieres on Feb. 1 on AMC+.
