Things got a little dicey for Jayson Tatum early in his return to action for the Boston Celtics vs. the Dallas Mavericks on Friday (March 6) night, the St. Louis native missing all of his early attempts in Boston's 120-100 win over the Mavs. But Tatum kept attacking within the flow of the game, and finished the night with 15 points, 12 rebounds, 7 assists, and a steal. Not at all bad for someone who had not played NBA basketball for most of the last year, especially when you bracket the 6-of-16 shooting he needed to shake off the early rust.
"When he was 100% healthy, he’s missed 6 shots in a row before, so I don’t think that really mattered," said Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla after the game. "What I liked is just his approach and he continued to rebound."
"I thought he competed on the defensive end, gave up a free throw rebound, which we've got to get better at," added Mazzulla. "But, I think it's just the process."
"But, I think just the process and the mindset that he played with, there were good shots," said the Celtics coach. "So, you take them again, (he) competed defensively, I think he had 3 assists, (and) 2 rebounds before he even took his first shot."
"So, I think just the play making, but just a steady balance, of the things, of the process, of what we need to do to win, and I thought he attacked that well tonight."
