The Texas Rangers outlasted the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, 2-1 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.
The win puts the Rangers on top to begin the three-game series against Baltimore and puts them back at .500 (58-58). How did they get it done?
In the top of the second inning, the Orioles struck first when Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi allowed a two-out double to Leody Tavares before giving up an RBI single to Coby Mayo.
Eovaldi and the defense were able to get out of the frame after that, but after Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the inning with a single, Texas’s batting order had no response.
The theme remained the same in the third, fourth and fifth innings for the Rangers, and they struck out seven times between Nimmo’s single in the second through the bottom of the fifth inning. There were no answers to be found, but luckily, Eovaldi and the defense had done enough to keep the Orioles off the board, too.
The Rangers did not have an answer for Orioles right-hander Shane Baz, who continued to make things difficult on them through the middle innings, and they were running out of time to score.
Then, in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Rangers broke through against Baz. Elias Diaz opened the frame with a leadoff single, and after Nicky Lopez advanced Diaz to second base on a sacrifice bunt, Joc Pederson launched a two-run home run to right field to give Texas a 2-1 lead.
It was Pederson’s 21st home run of the season, and it was also the last hit the Rangers would get during the game. Baz ended up being Baltimore’s only pitcher who took the mound on Friday, and he pitched eight innings and struck out nine Texas batters.
By the end of the game, the Rangers went 3-for-25 at the plate, but Pederson, along with the effort of the defense and the pitching staff, was the difference in the end.
Eovaldi ended up providing 5.1 innings and two strikeouts while allowing four hits, one earned run and two walks. Once his night was over in the sixth, manager Skip Schumaker went to reliever Tyler Alexander to finish the inning.
Alexander struck out one batter and allowed one walk, and he was awarded the winning decision to push him to 3-2 on the year. Robby Ahlstrom took the mound after Alexander for one inning, and Jacob Latz sealed the deal by pitching two innings and striking out three batters while allowing two hits and one walk for his 22nd save of the season.
