Joaquin Pereyra can sing his own “Redemption Song.”
The Minnesota United midfielder failed on two penalty kicks in a draw with UANL Tigres on Friday, but the Argentine totaled two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win over Atlante in the third and final Leagues Cup match Tuesday at Allianz Field.
With the standout performance from Pereyra, the Loons ended a nine-game winless skid in all competitions. It’s also the first time in eight games Minnesota has scored multiple goals.
Atlante took a 1-0 lead with a goal from Aaron Quiros in the 32nd minute. Loons defenders allowed it to happen: DJ Taylor gave up a run in behind, Julian Gressel failed to clear a pass, and Devin Padelford was the victim of a bad deflection into the back of the net.
The St. Paul stadium was mostly empty and was lifeless after the opening goal.
Given MNUFC’s long drought, fans in the Wonderwall supporters sections jokingly brought fluorescent arrows to direct players toward the goal to score on during Leagues Cup. That south net is where Minnesota scored all three on Tuesday.
Mauricio Gonzalez scored his second goal in a Loons shirt in the 59th minute when he finished a tap-in courtesy of the playmaking of Pereyra.
Then Pereyra got a goal off an assist from Marcus Caldeira in the 75th minute. And Pereyra scored again on another assist from Caldeira in the 89th minute; that one needed a VAR check to count.
The win, however, comes too late for MNUFC in the tournament with clubs from Mexico’s Liga MX. The Loons (1-1-1, 4 point) had a scoreless draw with Tigres on Friday and a 2-1 loss to Juarez a week ago; that combination of results led to the Loons being eliminated from the tournament before Tuesday’s match.
United restarts MLS play on Saturday night at Real Salt Lake.
