The pitch was a ball. Frankly, it was well off the plate, not even borderline.

St. Louis Cardinals phenom JJ Wetherholt didn't care. And despite standing just 5-foot-9, he decided it was time to show off some rare power.

Wetherholt hit his first home run on Thursday as part of his MLB debut. But it didn't come on your standard home run pitch.

It came on an offering more than five inches outside off the plate.

And somehow, Wetherholt reached out and crushed it 425 feet to dead centerfield.

The pitch that JJ Wetherholt hit out yesterday had a plate side of -1.07 ft, which is nearly 5 inches from the edge of the strike zone. He hit it 425 feet.

He’s the first LHH to go 425+ on a pitch at least a foot from the center of the plate since… Nolan Gorman in July of 2023 https://t.co/EmFOYJsVHt

Frankly, that almost shouldn't be possible.

Wetherholt doesn't look like a big, strong power hitter, and he just hit the kind of home run that potentially no one else will hit this entire season.

That's unfair for opposing pitchers, and it also emphasizes the special talent the Cardinals have on their hands.

They could've had Wetherholt start the season in Triple-A. The Cards aren't expected to be particularly competitive, anyway.

But nope. They wanted Wetherholt leading off on Opening Day. And he proved why with a ridiculous, awesome homer.
