Jim Nantz isn’t saying much publicly in the media about Tony Romo’s legal situation, but he made one thing very clear this week: his relationship with his longtime CBS broadcasting partner extends far beyond football.
With CBS still determining what comes next for Romo following his OWI arrest in July, questions remain about whether the two will ever reunite in the broadcast booth. Nantz addressed the situation Tuesday during CBS Sports’ annual NFL Media Day.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Romo’s broadcasting future, Nantz made it clear that he still considers the former Cowboys quarterback a close friend.
“Tony is a great friend of mine and has been for years,” Nantz said.
Their relationship actually predates Romo’s broadcasting career by several years. Nantz explained that the two go back to 2011, when Romo got married, and Nantz was invited to his wedding.
That means their friendship was already well established before Romo joined the CBS booth in 2017.
Nantz also spoke warmly about Romo’s family, specifically mentioning his wife, Candice Crawford.

While Nantz acknowledged that he has spoken with Romo about the situation, he isn’t willing to discuss the details publicly.
Nantz said that the contents of their conversations would remain private, adding that he believes keeping those discussions confidential is “the appropriate way” to handle the situation.
That’s especially notable considering the uncertainty surrounding Romo’s CBS future.
The network has yet to make a definitive decision about whether Romo will return to the booth, leaving his longtime partnership with Nantz in question.
Regardless of what ultimately happens professionally, Nantz made it clear that he isn’t viewing Romo simply as a former broadcasting colleague.
He’s a longtime friend whose family remains on Nantz’s mind as the situation unfolds.
Whether they eventually share a booth again remains uncertain, but Nantz’s comments make it clear that their personal relationship won’t be defined by what happens with CBS.
