Jannik Sinner -- the No. 1 seed at the French Open -- lost to Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round at Roland Garros, in an absolute stunner that had a controversial moment that changed everything.
In the third set, with Sinner up 5-4, he started cramping up. TNT mics caught Sinner speaking with the chair umpire, who explained how the rules work if it's not a medical issue. Sinner claimed it was dehydration and got a medical examination.
That was controversial, as the legendary Jim Courier noted on the air. And then? He called out the whole process.
"This is unfair for Cerundolo," he noted. "This is not an injury... this [is] clearly cramping."
"Listen, we love the top players," he added, "they drive the sport. But you've got to apply the rules fairly. The rules are being bent for the top players. You cannot tell me you've got to take him off court to ty and see what his vital signs are like. This is absolute baloney."
Given the fact that there's extreme heat at Roland Garros, with players leaving the court in wheelchairs, you might think that cramps are indeed a medical condition. But we'll see if there's a response to say that Sinner was within his rights to ask for the medical timeout.
