The New York Jets placed quarterback Justin Fields on season-ending IR earlier this week.

Head coach Aaron Glenn also said rookie undrafted quarterback Brady Cook will remain in the starting role. This could essentially end Fields' tenure with the Jets.

Jets general manager Darren Mougey signed Fields to a two-year contract worth $40 million last offseason. The franchise was looking for a short-term bridge option following their messy and public split with Aaron Rodgers. The thought was that Fields would be a temporary solution.

Fields opened the season as the Jets' starter. Injuries and inconsistent play forced Coach Glenn to consider alternative options. The Jets have started three quarterbacks this season, with Tyrod Taylor and Cook getting into the lineup. Now it looks like Mougey will be willing to absorb a sizable dead cap charge to release Fields this coming offseason.

I doubt that Fields ever suits up again for the Jets. They owe him $10M gtd next season, but it’s time to move on. It didn’t work. Time for a reset at QB. https://t.co/6lTQceMrLY

Fields has not played since Nov. 13 against the New England Patriots. The former Ohio State standout had been inactive for the previous three contests. Fields is scheduled to carry a $23 million cap charge in 2026. Releasing him would create a $22 million dead-money hit with just $1 million in cap savings.

The Jets (3-12) are slated to possess five first-round picks across the 2026 and 2027 NFL drafts. Right now, the real-time order has the Jets with the fourth overall selection in 2026. They could target a quarterback like Fernando Mendoza or Dante Moore, but might have to trade up to guarantee their hand-picked QB.

Teams have been willing to absorb historical dead-money hits to release quarterbacks in recent offseasons. The Jets' decision to release Rodgers saw them incur a $49 million charge spread over two years. That makes the $22 million charge for releasing Fields sounds like chump change.
