The New York Jets are currently slated to start Geno Smith at quarterback for the 2026 NFL season after Aaron Glenn said he can lead them to the "promised land."
Darren Mougey didn't give up much in the trade for Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders, and they're not spending a ton on him. So, that leaves open the door for the Jets to pivot if Smith struggles.
If they do pivot, fourth-round rookie Cade Klubnik will be the one taking over for the Jets. And after the rookie minicamp, CBS Sports Carter Bahns revealed an update on Klubnik that could be both good and bad news.
"Cade Klubnik received a majority of the Jets' quarterback reps and looked to be empowered to make changes at the line of scrimmage," Bahns reports.
Klubnik getting the majority of the reps is a noteworthy report, and his line-of-scrimmage changes also could bode well for success in his rookie season. That's the good news. But, on the bad side of things, if Klubnik plays too well, the Jets might pass on a QB in 2027.
Cade Klubnik update from Jets rookie minicamp could be good and bad news
While Klubnik's work at the rookie minicamp is encouraging, and he could be a decent option for the Jets in 2026, there is some risk if he's good next year.
The Jets aren't going to outwardly tank in 2026, as Glenn likely needs a decent season to keep his job. But, ideally, they struggle enough to land a top pick in the draft to take one of the quarterbacks in next year's draft.

But, if Klubnik takes over for Smith and looks good, as Bahns put it, "If he clicks, the Jets may be less inclined to use first-round capital on a quarterback next year..."
This scenario would only work out if Klubnik were a truly great QB. If he's just a decent starter, but plays well enough to bait the Jets into passing on a QB next year, it could be a total disaster.
Such a scenario is incredibly unlikely, and this rookie minicamp report doesn't even indicate anything too outlandish. But this scenario is one to keep in mind in 2026 as one that might be the most disastrous for the Jets.
