Jerry Jones willing to work with Mark Cuban on a Cowboys deal

The NFL doesn’t have another owner as forward-facing as Jerry Jones, who also serves as the franchise’s general manager and has always had a penchant for stirring the pot. According to Jones himself, he’s “open to” bringing in a previous NBA owner who has a similar reputation.

Dallas Morning News’ Calvin Watkins reported that former Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is “open to” buying a stake in the Cowboys, and Jones is apparently willing to play ball.

“That’s exactly why if you’re me, you would be open to that is because of the man,” Jones said to Watkins. “I have all the respect in the world for him and I know what he did for the Mavericks and what he’s done for basketball.

“He’s in additional to financial boatstreams of your team, you want to associate with the highest quality of [a person] who loves the game and then also at the same time wants to do something about it. Mark leads the way in that.”

For Cuban’s part, he said that he is ” sure our Harbinger fund would be open to it,” of buying an interest in America’s Football Team.

Are the Cowboys even selling?​

Jones’ son Stephen, who is an executive in the Cowboys organization, recently said that the Cowboys “wouldn’t rule out” selling a stake in the team.

“We wouldn’t rule it out, but, you know, we’d also be very particular in who we would bring in as a partner in terms of that,” Stephen said.

“But, yes, it was designed when we passed that rule that you could have, you know, private equity involved in the NFL, and you could have minority partners, you know, it made sense for a lot of different reasons, and every owner who chooses to go that path can speak for themselves in terms of why they’re doing it, but it does — I think it’s a great tool. I think it makes the league stronger personally, and, certainly, it’s not something we would ever totally rule out. But I wouldn’t say anything’s on the front burner, either.”

Cuban sold his majority stake in the Mavericks at a whopping $3.5 billion valuation after purchasing the team in 2000 for $285 million. There’s no telling what he’d be able to do with the most valuable franchise in the NFL.
