The Green Bay Packers will be losing at least two defensive assistant coaches to Jeff Hafley and the Miami Dolphins. In addition to defensive backs coach Ryan Downard, Hafley and the Dolphins are also expected to take linebackers coach Sean Duggan, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Downard will become Hafley's secondary coach and pass game coordinator. Duggan could be the Dolphins defensive coordinator, per Silverstein, although Hafley will call plays in Miami.
If Downard and Duggan leave as expected, Matt LaFleur and new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon would need to replace at least two top position coaches on the defensive side entering 2026.
Duggan, who worked with Hafley at Ohio State and Boston College and in Green Bay, was a defensive assistant working with linebackers in 2024, his first season with the Packers. Hafley promoted him to linebackers coach, replacing Anthony Campanile, in 2025. However, the Packers linebackers took a step back in terms of production under Duggan.
Duggan was an assistant at Ohio State in 2019, when Hafley was the co-defensive coordinator. He followed Hafley to Boston College, where he was the linebackers coach for all four years. In 2023, he was the co-defensive coordinator.
Of the coaches currently on staff, Jeff Koonz could be a replacement candidate for Duggan. Koonz coached linebackers at West Virginia for five seasons (2020-24), at Ole Miss for one season (2019), at North Texas for two seasons (2017-18), at Cincinnati for two seasons (2015-16) and at Louisiana Tech for four seasons (2010-13) before joining the Packers in 2025.
