CHICAGO - This is Max Fried's day to pitch, on a windy and overcast evening in the Windy City.
Against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on Saturday night, the Yankees' lefty is scheduled to make his third start since arriving off the injured list due to a left elbow bone bruise.
Last time out, Fried (4-3, 3.23) lasted just three innings Monday and gave up three runs against the White Sox on the South Side, but the Yanks rallied back for a 9-5 win.
Fried is likely to be in the 75-80 pitch limit range. He'll be opposed by fellow lefty David Peterson (6-7, 5.80), making his sixth start for the Cubs, following his trade from the Mets.
Earlier on Saturday, the Yankees sent reliever Camilo Doval to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for two minor leaguers.
This was Yankees GM Brian Cashman's opening move on MLB trade deadline weekend, with Monday's 6 p.m. (EDT) deadline looming and the Yanks still searching for catching, bullpen and lineup upgrades.
To replace Doval, the Yankees have recalled right-handed reliever Yovanny Cruz from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he's expected to arrive before the Yanks' game and be available to pitch.
Of note in manager Aaron Boone's Saturday lineup, Ben Rice and Trent Grisham are being rested, Jazz Chisholm Jr. (leg cramping) returns and Spencer Jones gets a second straight start against a lefty.
