For much of the 2025-26 NBA regular season, star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum had to watch his ball club exceed expectations despite a number of high-profile exits and his Achilles tendon injury he had be rehabbing over the past offseason. But the St. Louis native learned a lot about what was driving Boston's unlikely success, and recently opened up to ESPN reporter Ashley ShahAhmadi about that dynamic.
"I talked to the team, actually, before I came back and just showed my appreciation for it," recalled Tatum. "The way that they played this season, the way they attacked this season from a competitive standpoint and a togetherness standpoint."
"Just being around him every day motivated me during my rehab process, because I really I missed being a part of the team and I miss being out there and just seeing them be themselves every day," he added.
The Duke alum said that proximity to the team "really helped me throughout this process" of getting back on the court with the Celtics this season.
"I just keep saying it over and over again, just like the gratitude that I have (...)," said Tatum. "knew I would be excited to be back on the court, but it's times 10, the way that I feel. I'm just being back out there."
