We're only two games into the Boston Celtics' defense of their 2024 NBA championship, but it's already clear that this push for a title might be more difficult than last year's -- at least from a health standpoint.
Last postseason, the Celtics coped with injuries to big man Kristaps Porzingis. Still, they managed to plow through the playoffs with a 12-3 record.
This postseason, they entered the playoffs with concerns about star wing Jaylen Brown's knee and now, fellow star wing Jayson Tatum's wrist. Tatum suffered an injury to the wrist when he was pushed into a stanchion in Boston's Game 1 win, and he sat out the team's Game 2 win over the Magic.

“He’s dealing with a severe bone bruise," Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said on Thursday. "He’s day-to-day and he’s progressively gotten better each day. Yesterday, he went through all the protocols and did everything you should possibly do up to the last moment to try to play. He just wasn’t able to do it but he’ll go back at it again today and he’s in that day-to-day process right now.”
Boston announced before Game 3 that Tatum would be back in action. Because the injury is to his right wrist--his shooting hand--there is some concern about how his shot will be affected.
And so Celtics fans took some comfort from glimpses coming out of Orlando of Tatum showing no ill effects of the injury. One clip from Orlando Magic HQ reporter Brett James shows Tatum on the left wing working on shots from behind the 3-point line with a Celtics coach.
It's only four shots, but Tatum is shown making all four, working from the corner to the wing.
Another video from WEEI's Justin Turpin shows Tatum in the opposite corner, knocking down three 3-pointers. Again, it's just warmups, and there's no one really defending Tatum. But as Turpin wrote, "Jayson Tatum's shot looks alright."
Tatum and the Celtics lead the Magic, 2-0, and play Game 3 on Friday night in Orlando.
