The Boston Celtics looked to be in dire straits heading into Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals versus the New York Knicks. They had lost Game 4 and fell behind 3-1 in the series while also losing star forward Jayson Tatum to a ruptured Achilles late in that contest, and many had written them off.

But they responded with a resounding performance in Game 5 on Wednesday. After the game was tied at 59 at halftime, they outscored New York 32-17 in the third quarter, and unlike in past games in this series, they held onto their lead and claimed a 127-102 victory.

Jaylen Brown had 26 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds, and afterward, he gave Tatum a shout-out on national television.

"We got contributions from everybody... That one is for JT. Get well, bro," Brown said.

Even though Tatum struggled for most of this series leading up to his injury, it was going to take an all-hands-on-deck effort for Boston to claim Game 5.

The team also received a monster performance from guard Derrick White, one of the NBA's most underrated complementary players, who scored a game-high 34 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field and 7-of-13 from 3-point range.

Off the bench, center Luka Kornet posted 10 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks.

As a team, Boston shot 52.4% overall and 44.9% from downtown, while the Knicks went just 35.8% from the field.

The men in green still face a steep uphill climb, however. The team will have to win Game 6 on Friday at Madison Square Garden, and Knicks fans will be hyped and loud in that contest. It would then have to win Game 7 back in Beantown.

Doing all that will be very difficult without Tatum, who averaged 26.8 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game during the regular season.
